What are injectable fillers?

The skin is made of two layers, an outer layer called the epidermis and an inner layer called the dermis. The area between these two layers contains a jelly-like substance called hyaluronic acid(HA). When we are young, our skin contains plenty of hyaluronic acid. However, when we age the hyaluronic acid between the layers of our skin diminishes. This decrease in hyaluronic acid causer the skin to lose its natural volume and fullness and creates wrinkles or folds.

Injectable fillers are injectable gels made from naturally-occurring substances such as hyaluronic acid injected just under the skin in order to add volume to aging skin, lips and to fill and lift wrinkles and folds. Fillers add volume for a more natural youthful appearance.

Hyaluronic acid is the most prominent glycasaminoglycan in the skin. Hyaluronic acid potently binds to water and, when injected into the skin, volumizes, softens, and hydrates the skin.

Hyaluronic acid stabilizes intercellular structures and produces the viscoelastic network for collagen and elastin fibers to bind together. As seen with photoaging, these connections fail, thus resulting in disorganized clumps of collagen and elastin. These benefits make hyaluronic acid an excellent filling agent. In the uncommon circumstance when an underirable outcome occurs with hyaluronic acid, correction is possible with the injection of commercially available hyaluronidase, which breaks down the unwanted hyaluronic acid filler. Fillers from non-biodegradable sources such as silicone gel, mineral oils are not recommended to used. Animal derived collagen products are highly allergic potential.

How long will filler results last may vary from person to person. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are gradually broken down and absorbed by the body metabolism.
