Skin Condition » Stretch Mark

Stretch marks or striae (singular stria), as they are called in dermatology, are a form of scarring on the skin with an off-color hue. They are caused by tearing of the dermis, and over time can diminish but not disappear completely.

Stretch marks are often the result of the rapid stretching of the skin associated with rapid growth. When the elastic middle layer of skin called the dermis is stretched, it leads to a breakdown of connective tissue, inflammation, and then scar formation as the injury heals. For this reason, stretch marks are common during puberty and rapid growth spurts in adolescence (they typically heal by the late teens or early 20s), pregnancy, excessive weight gain and obesity, when muscle mass increases rapidly and stretches the skin (like during bodybuilding).

Stretch marks may also be influenced by hormonal changes such aswhen individuals use topical or high doses of ingested steroids for many weeks or months. Steroid is responsible for the development of stretch marks affect the dermis by preventing the fibroblasts from forming collagen and elastic fibers, necessary to keep rapidly growing skin taut. This creates a lack of supportive material, as the skin is stretched and leads to dermal and epidermal tearing.

The marks often start off as reddish or purplish in color and then become glossy skin that appears streaked in silver or white.

Prevention
A randomized controlled study shows that oils or creams prevent the development of stretchmarks. This study found a daily application of a cream containing Gotu Kola extract and vitamin E was associated with fewer stretch marks during pregnancy.Another study, examined a cream containing vitamin E, panthenol, hyaluronic acid, elastin and menthol, fewer stretch marks during pregnancy versus no treatment has been reported. In sum, during pregnancy, the pregnant woman can prevent itchiness from the dry, stretched skin by keeping it moisturized.

Treatment

Fractional radiofrequency (eMatrix Gold skin resurfacing)
The eMatrixis the latest innovation utilizing radio-frequency energy to penetrate the skin, commonly used on acne scarsand alsobeen used in treating stretch marks. It will encourage collagen productionand stimulates the body's healing response in the skin. This laser utilizes radio-frequency energy to penetrate the skin. The result is little damage to the skin's outer layers, but the eventual development of smoother skin.

Fractional Laser Therapy
As the laser is sometimes associated with hyperpigmentation, like other laser treatments, this may take numerous treatments in order to be effective

Cellular stamp
The Cellular stamp device allows for appropriate treatment needle depth to activate the cascade of fibroblast and growth hormone steps to generate more skin, collagen and elastin for smooth and healthy colored skin. The skin of the epidermis effectively thickens and noticeable smoother and evening of stretch marks is the result.
